A heartfelt boxing drama and loose biography of Rai Fazio, Two Fists, One Heart follows champion boxer and nightclub doorman, Anthony Argo (Amalm) through a period of soul-searching as his relationship with his father-trainer, Joe (Fantastichini), is strained. Anthony discovers love when he meets Kate (Marais) and a world outside of his father’s iron-fist training regime, which he has only ever known since he was a child. This leads to Anthony rebelling and Joe disowning him by taking on Nico Manchini (Fazio) as a new champion apprentice. But when Manchini betrays Joe, blood proves thicker than water when Anthony decides to return to the ring and fight Manchini to defend his father’s honour.
As TV-turned-film director Shawn Seet’s debut feature, Two Fists, One Heart demonstrates Seet’s skills as an editor-turned-director through the film’s strong balance of edited shots paired with energetic, emotional drama. Like the use of jump cuts to capture fleeting and intense moments in the boxing scenes; and lingering close-ups in tender settings between Anthony and Kate. Although there were instances in the story that did feel long drawn, a luminous mise-en-scéne and cinematic portrayal of Perth city delightfully empowers the film enough to keep audiences drawn.
Seet also manages to draw out robust performances from his cast, especially in their character’s relationships with one another. The father-son relationship arc that drives the film is stalwart and believable, while the romance between Anthony and Kate feels sincere.
Two Fists, One Heart is a champion and a highly entertaining coming-of-age family drama.
