Quality cinema will have a new home in Canberra with the announcement today by Palace Cinemas of a flagship ‘new generation’ cinema to open in 2012.
The Palace Electric Cinema will be part of NewActon Nishi, Australia’s most radically sustainable new development.
The NewActon Nishi precinct, which features leading-edge contemporary architectural style and the world’s best sustainability practices, is bounded by Edinburgh Avenue and Parkes Way, facing Lake Burley Griffin, and a short walk to the city centre, major cultural attractions, hotels and apartments, and with spectacular views across the lake to Parliament House and Australia’s national icons.
The cinema will bring to Canberra a state-of-the-art, high-end cinema experience, with amphitheatre seating and the latest in digital projection and sound, along with a sophisticated bar and gourmet café.

“We’ve undertaken an exhaustive search to find the perfect location for a Palace flagship cinema in our nation’s capital and the quality of this stunning precinct provides us with the opportunity to set a new and superior level of cinema experience.”

The Palace Electric Cinema will be sited between the luxury new Nishi apartment and boutique building (designed by world-noted architects Suppose Design Office (Tokyo) and Fender Katsalidis Architects (Melbourne) in conjunction with engineering consultant group, ARUP (London), and the new headquarters for the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, which shares the space with hand-picked restaurants, cafes, galleries, shops and other lifestyle facilities.
Palace Cinemas is the largest independent cinema operator in Australia and the only national quality/art house cinema group. The group comprises 85 screens and 20 locations nationally.
