ABC iview to screen web series Altruman

Boomgate Films is proud to announce that its anticipated new web series Altruman, about a superhero discovering what it really means to be brave, has been licensed by ABC iview, Australia’s leading online video platform as part of its online exclusive content.

It will premiere on 29th September, 2014. The six-part series came to the attention of ABC iview Programming Manager, Penny Wright, who believes the quirky concept of a selfless superhero who begins to question his life choices after he is diagnosed with cancer, will appeal to ABC viewers. “Altruman is beautifully written and the lead character’s real life issues are convincing and moving. It’s a captivating Australian web series that we are excited to have on ABC iview.”

Co-creator, Robin Geradts-Gill says, “We couldn’t be more thrilled that ‘Altruman’ has found a home on ABC iview. It’s an honour that this little series that was originally conceived as a weekend project has been given the tick of approval by the national broadcaster. To find a platform where it will reach such a broad audience is the sort of thing you dream about as a filmmaker.”

He continues, “Obviously there have been a lot of takes on the ‘everyday superhero, but Altruman’s different in that you never actually see him being a hero. What he’s struggling with is his day-to-day life, things that all of us deal with, not just superheroes.”

“The web series is the perfect format”, co-creator Hannah Moon explains. “It allows us to just dip into Altruman’s life at these key moments.” Each of the six episodes is self-contained yet still continues to tell the story and struggles that Altruman is facing. “They’re short, they’re fun, you can watch them on your lunch hour, but each of them contains real drama”, describes Robin in why they went with the format.

The series is produced by rising Melbourne production company Boomgate Films with assistance from Screen Australia, following a successful 2012 Pozible fundraising campaign which saw donors sent their very own pair of Altruman undies as a thank you gift. It comes on the back of Boomgate Films’ recent success with their short film ‘Dario’, which premieres this weekend at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Based on a short film of the same name, the web series reunites the team behind the original and adds some exciting cast members, including comedian Lawrence Leung and Australian drama stalwarts Deidre Rubenstein & Tony Nikolakopoulos, as well as award winning Director Of Photography Ryan Alexander Lloyd.

Featuring a soundtrack packed with emerging and established Australian talent including The Panics, Ainslie Wills, The Little Stevies and Jack Carty, the Altruman web series will be launched online, available free for everyone in Australia to watch on 29th September, 2014 at iview.abc.net.au.
