ADG to announce Cecil Holmes Award recipients

Press release from ADG

The Australian Directors Guild today announces the recipients of the prestigious Cecil Holmes Award, which recognises services to directing. The award will be presented to Sally Riley and Erica Glynn at a special reception during the forthcoming ADG conference in Adelaide 27 Feb – 1 Mar 2011. Former recipients of the award include Paul Cox, Tom Zubrycki, Rolf de Heer as well as Freda Glynn (Erica’s mother) for her role in establishing CAAMA.

ADG president Ray Argall says “ In recognition of the invaluable work of the Indigenous branch of the former Australian Film Commission (now the Indigenous Department of Screen Australia) in giving directors a creative voice, the ADG Board awards the Cecil Holmes Award to Sally Riley and Erica Glynn on behalf of, and in recognition of the work done by the many individuals working with the branch, whose collective contributions helped the Indigenous unit nurture, support and foster the talents of directors at a critical point in their development.

The branch encouraged directors (creators) to express themselves cinematically, and gave them a unique and individual voice in filmmaking, especially in screen drama. In a world where finance, box office and ratings increasingly rule, the work produced through the branch reminds us how important the creative voice is in our storytelling, and that writer-directors flourish when they are supported and given creative freedom to find their voice and share that with a wide audience.”

Indigenous directors Warwick Thornton (Samson and Delilah) and Beck Cole (Here I Am), who have both been supported by the branch will run a joint masterclass during the ADG conference. The conference offering three days of masterclasses, workshops and seminars on directing is being held for the first time in collaboration with the BigPond Adelaide Film Festival (BAFF) and the Australian International
Documentary Conference (AIDC). For further details on the conference go to:
