AFM 2008: Paramount circling Mungo remake

By Simon de Bruyn

Despite not yet having an Australian theatrical release, paranormal mockumentary Lake Mungo is set to be remade in the US by Paramount Vantage, with an official announcement of the deal expected later this week.

The film’s sales agent, Arclight Films’ genre division Darclight, is busy negotiating the finer points of the deal after the film premiered at this year’s American Film Market.

Lake Mungo was selected to play at both the Brisbane and Sydney Film Festivals earlier this year, but has yet to sign a local distributor.

The film was partly funded by the IndiVision Production Fund in 2006, the same round that funded another breakout international success, Black Water.

Shot in a faux-documentary style, Lake Mungo tells the story of a teenager whose death sets off a series of paranormal events. The original film was written and directed by Joel Anderson and produced by Georgie Nevile and David Rapsey.
