Angry actor returns fire at critic

Actors who get lousy reviews usually ignore them or suffer in silence- but not Kevin Harrington.

The veteran actor was so incensed by a review by News Ltd.’s Leigh Paatsch of the DVD of Cliffy, he vented on Facebook.

The ABC telemovie features Harrington as Cliff Young, who became an unlikely hero at the age of 61 when he won the 875km endurance race from Sydney to Melbourne.

In Saturday’s Daily Telegraph and Herald-Sun Paatsch dismissed it as a “dreadful telemovie that turns the ripping true story of the late ultra-marathon legend Cliff Young into a crap-tastic cartoon. How the ABC ever ponied up a commitment to this dim-witted affair beggars belief.”

Paatsch advised readers who want the “real tale- much of which was ignored or changed by this TV calamity,” to read Julietta Jameson’s book Cliffy: The Cliff Young Story.

His verdict: “1 star, run the other way.”

Harrington, whose credits include the movies Red Hill, Australian Rules, The Honourable Wally Norman and The Dish and TV series Underbelly, Winners & Losers, SeaChange, Blue Heelers and Neighbours, wasn’t going to let that pass, blasting Paatsch on his Facebook page.

The actor queried the critic’s tastes, contrasting the sole star for Cliffy with the 3.5 stars he awarded Fast & Furious 6. He told IF, “A critic is useful if he or she has some academic or practical knowledge of that which they are criticising. The public become enlightened as to the artistic merit of the piece because the critic has the qualifications to steer them towards superior quality work. [The Australian’s] Graeme Blundell is one of these critics. Alternatively a critic may represent Everyman tastes and can therefore steer his constituency towards the popular. [Paatsch] has proven himself hopelessly inadequate according to both criteria.”

Harrington’s Facebook friends were quick to offer their support, with some making uncomplimentary remarks about Paatsch. Judging by some of the comments, film critics are about as popular as politicians.

  1. Dear Kevin,

    You are a terrific actor.

Having been shat on from a great height numerous times over the past 40 odd years, I feel the best thing is to ignore detractors. It is really not worth getting het up about.

And, I thought you WERE Cliff Young. One can’t say better than that.

All the best, and rocking. I wouldn’t miss whatever you did.

    David Hannay.

  2. Dear Kevin, I just watched Cliffy yesterday, thanks to IView, as I had not been able to watch when it was run, I was in two minds but it completely won me over. It was alternatively funny (I laughed out loud a few times) as well as heart warming and dramatic at times. I had watched in part to see some local sites (I live in NE Victoria)but got so wrapped up in the tale I had forgotten to look and only realised at the end of the training scenes I had been looking at the Stanley oval for some time. It was great and fully in keeping with the ABC’s very high standard for Aussie productions and you are right to trash said critic, as for 3.5 stars for Fast and Furious, PPPPPPLEASE spare me from his recommendations. Good work and keep it up

  3. I have often been less than enamoured by the critique offered by Mr Paatsch. He comes across as a very arrogant, one-eyed and often extremely chauvinistic reviewer. There have been countless films, especially those some may call ‘art-house’, he has slammed and I have enjoyed immensely. And I see 2 or 3 films per week, including all genres. It’s very obvious where his taste lies.

  4. Go Kev! Paatsch is one of the country’s worst film critics and seems to enjoy panning local productions. As one who also had a role in the movie I have had nothing but praise for the production and performances from the general public. It rated really well too. People like Paatsch are out of touch with their readers and are best ignored.Nevertheless, I’m glad you put the boot in Kev! Roy Billing

  5. “Cross” Paatsch is infamous for his atomic scathing wit, which is neither welcome or funny. CLIFFY was a great idea for a telemovie and well cast. It is a straight forward rustic tale and told for the same audience who like wholesome Aussie entertainment. Somthing not dynamic enough for mr fast and furious Paatsch and his high octane keyboard.

  6. Hello. Where was this critic when CLIFFY played? Some have suggested he was into his second bottle of red? After reading his piece, I’d have to agree. So far off the mark. I loved this Telemovie, and Kevin Harrington was absolutely brilliant in the role. I say “Focus” Mr.Paatsch.

  7. Good on you Kev , its about time the critics in this country got a critique, they are to quick to slag anything made in Australia , yet are happy to give some piece of crap american film five stars , it makes me wonder if a brown paper bag is involved . Luckily most viewers don’t take any notice of reviews and have made Cliffy a rating success for the ABC and everyone involved. I have had friends from all over Australia call me to say how much they enjoyed it , a sweet gentle Australian film with great performances from all the actors .

  8. If anything, Paatsch was being overly generous with his one star. “Cliffy” was a glorified sketch bumbling from one broad scene to the next. Zero stars.

  9. Havent had a chance to see Cliffy yet but my comment is about critics. I have been a film and theatre goer for the last 40 years and often enjoy productions that are panned by the critics. So many times are their views opposite to mine I always know if its panned I will love it. I wonder what qualifications these critics have.Do they have any experience in the areas they criticise. There is such a wide range of views from many different people who are the customers of these productions how can one person speak for all. Critics are redundant.

  10. I loved everything about Cliffy…As for Paatsch..”You don’t have to have a long neck to be a Goose”
