Crime thriller Animal Kingdom has swept the AFI award nominations, with a record-breaking 18 nods.

David Michôd’s debut feature received nominations in every category it was eligible for, which included best director, best film, best original screenplay and best actor.

Today's launch, at Sydney's Walsh Bay, was attended by an array of industry guests, with category nominations presented by Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett as well as Underbelly star Gyton Grantley and Summer Coda’s Alex Dimitriades.

“2010 has been a remarkable year for Australian film and television,” said last-minute replacement host Jackie Weaver from the podium.

As well as hosting, Weaver also received accolades for her performance in Animal Kingdom.  She is up for best lead actress in a category that also recognised Abbie Cornish (Bright Star), Morgana Davies (The Tree) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (The Tree).

“I’m glad I decided to come,” Weaver joked, after the announcement was made by Blanchett.

World War I film Beneath Hill 60 will battle the crime thriller after picking up 12 nominations.

Australian films have so far earned more than $40 million at the domestic box office this year.

Network Ten's telemovie Hawke, starring Richard Roxburgh, lead the way in television with six nominations while Tangle received five.

Ratings juggernaut Masterchef is up against The Gruen Transfer for Best Light Entertainment series.

All winners will be revealed at the two-day award ceremony on December 10 and 11 at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. Kenny star Shane Jacobson will host the event.
