Another win for Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett has another lead actress trophy to add to her collection for her riveting performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.

Blanchett took the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) International award for best actress in a ceremony in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon local time. AACTA president Geoffrey Rush handed the gong to Cate in the shindig at the Sunset Marquis.

Blanchett has won a host of North American critics’ awards including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Toronto for Blue Jasmine and has been nominated for a BAFTA award.

We’ll know next Friday if she’s in the running for an Academy Award. She won the Oscar for best supporting actress in The Aviator in 2005. She would be the first Aussie actress in history to win two Oscars.

Gravity was named best film and BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuarón took the trophy for best director at the third annual AACTA International Awards. Australia’s Rising Sun Pictures was among the VFX teams employed on the outer space odyssey.

Director David O. Russell’s American Hustle received the gongs for best screenplay and for supporting actress Jennifer Lawrence.

Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave’s Chiwetel Ejiofor was named best actor and Michael Fassbender best supporting actor.

The awards are determined by the AACTA International Chapter, which consists of more than 80 Australian filmmakers and executives.

Rush said: “The AACTA International Awards are Australia’s international stamp of screen success. They recognise our international counterparts, add an Australian voice to international Academy discussion, and celebrate our fellow Australians working internationally. “

The International Awards were broadcast on Foxtel’s Arena on Sunday night and are being repeated on Monday.

The 3rd AACTA Awards will be presented at The Star Event Centre at a lunch on January 28 and at a ceremony on January 30, the latter broadcast on Network Ten.
