Aussie animator’s tall short in contention for Oscar

A still from Robertino Zambrano's Love in the Time of Madness.

Australian animator, director and producer Robertino Zambrano’s film Love in the Time of Madness has been shortlisted for an Oscar nomination.

It is one of ten short films to be shortlisted for the Best Animated Short Film Oscar.

There will five nominees selected from this shortlist in January 2016.

The nine-minute short is narrated (and co-produced and co-directed) by the US college baskeballer, Melissa Johnson, and is based on her own life story.

It was written by Johnson and explores her experiences as a tall woman on the dating scene.

In the film Johnson says: "I hit 6'4" in the 8th grade at 127lbs with size 12 feet. Basketball and I just made sense together."

The film follows her misadventures in love as she dates shorter men and feels the pressure of others looks and judgements.

Johnson describes it best when she says: “After all, we don’t see other people the way that they are, we see them the way that we are.”

The story was brought to life by Australian animators KAPWA Studioworks, with Aussie director and animator Zambrano at the helm.

KAPWA used a combination of traditional 2D animation techniques, hand generated textures and digital 2D and 3D animation techniques.

It was chosen from 60 other entries that had qualified in its category.
