Aussie zombie flick opens with Tugg on-demand campaign

Australian indie feature Me and My Mates vs the Zombie Apocalypse has opened theatrically across the country using a combination of the Tugg screening-on-demand platform and Monster Fest’s fright night screenings.

The film has opened in six states to largely sell-out crowds and has secured the second largest Tugg screening in Australia.

The film has used social media to gather its support using a tiny fraction of the usual marketing spend.

Beginning with a record breaking indiegogo campaign the filmmakers went on to cast Alex Williamson in the main role.

Williamson is an online comedian with a social media reach in the millions as ‘The Loosest Aussie Bloke Ever’.

Jim Jefferies, who found fame in the US with his TV show, Legit, co-stars in the film. Australian comedian, Greg Fleet is the third lead. It is hoped he will attract an older audience.

The film has been picked up by LA based sales agent Shoreline Entertainment, which is premiering the film internationally at the Sitges Fantastic Film Festival in Spain in October.

Director, Declan Shrubb, will attend the festival to help drum up distributor sales worldwide.

The film is a tongue-in-cheek look at a zombie apocalypse. The three comedians play tradies that get stuck in a telephone exchange during the onset of the zombie outbreak.

The film is distributed in Australia by Titan View’s new genre label Gorgon Films.

It was funded by the ACT Government and ScreenACT, The Academy of Interactive Entertainment and Silversun Pictures.

Shot entirely in the ACT, the film was discovered by ScreenACT as part of its Low-Budget Feature initiative.

The film was written and directed by Declan Shurbb. It was produced by Christian Doran and Daniel Sanguineti.
