Aussies miss out at Golden Globes

Aussie actress Jacki Weaver has walked away empty handed from the 68th annual Golden Globes, missing out to The Fighter’s Melissa Leo.

The star of Animal Kingdom has won critical acclaim and an AFI award for her role as the matriarch of a criminal family. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

But Weaver wasn’t the only local to miss out on a Gong, with the Awards ceremony a bleak night for all Australians in the running for awards.

Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Geoffery Rush (The King’s Speech) and Toni Collette (The United States of Tara) were also beaten in their categories.

The King’s Speech, a film with strong Australian connections through producer Emile Sherman, lost out to The Social Network for Best Motion Picture Drama, but star Colin Firth picked up the Best Actor Drama globe.

Facebook movie The Social Network also scored Best Director (David Fincher), Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin) and Best Original Score.

Best Television Drama went to Boardwalk Empire, while Glee picked up Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical.
