Australian screen composers elects new head

The Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC) has elected Clive Harrison as President, and Guy Gross as Vice-President at their Annual General Meeting this week.

The AGSC is the national industry association for composers working in film, television and multi-media. It was formed in 1985 and represents most of the countries leading screen composing practitioners.

Clive Harrison thanked the retiring President, Art Phillips. “Under Art’s stewardship the Guild has laid a strong foundation for our rates and conditions campaign, which will continue to be a major focus of the Guild. It has also focussed on skills development and education for composers with a popular program of seminars and master classes.”

Vice-President, Guy Gross, stated “Challenges facing Australian screen composers include the erosion of fee’s and conditions and unreasonable contractual demands placed on composers where the power of negotiation where the power of negotiation is not presently with the composers. Along with Clive, I look forward to working to ensure that the rights of composers are protected, and their future work opportunities secured."

Clive studied Classical Piano, Organ, Guitar, Double Bass and Classical Singing into his teens. He began his music career as a Session / Jazz Musician and Composer in 1975, working in Melbourne, Sydney, New York and Los Angeles. In that period Clive played on over 3,500 commercials, 50 rock and jazz albums and 9 Feature films. He released a Music Tutorial book in 1988 which sold worldwide. Since then has composed Music for 10 Albums, 300 TV commercials and over 200 Episodes of Children’s Animation as well as Children’s songs, TV Specials, Short Films and Documentaries. Clive recently Directed and Composed the music for "Gumnutz" – a telemovie for Channel 7, and is currently composing the music for "Pearlie", an Animated TV series based on the books of Wendy Harmer.

Guy Gross – Vice President, Australian Guild of Screen Composers
Guy has been a member of the AGSC since it’s reformation twenty years ago. He is one of Australia’s leading film and television composers. From his British Academy Award (BAFTA) nominated score to the international hit "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" to the US hit SCI-FI series Farscape, his film scores cover a huge variety of styles. Testament to this diversity, Guy has received numerous awards from the Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC) and The Australian Performing Rights Association (APRA) including awards for; Best Music for a Documentary, Children’s Series, Short film, Animation, Promotional Video, Advertisement, TV Theme and twice for Best Music for a TV Series. His scores have been performed in concert by the Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland Symphony Orchestras.
