Box Office: The Boys are Back breaks $1m

By Adam Coleman

Scott Hicks-directed The Boys are Back has broken through the $1 million barrier after only its second week at the Australian box office.

The Hopscotch-distributed film took $404,100 over the weekend across 163 screens for a screen average of $2,479 . The Boys are Back is now the ninth Australian film to break the $1 million barrier this year, having taken $1,196,326.

Another Hopscotch-distributed film, Bright Star, will soon grace local screens when it is released on December 26. The Jane Campion-directed period drama about romantic poet John Keats has already grossed more than $US4 million ($4.35 million) after nine weeks in the US.

Meanwhile, the highest grossing local release this year, Mao’s Last Dancer is fast approaching $15 million. Bruce Beresford’s epic about the life of dancer Li Cunxin is now the 12th highest grossing local film ever at the Australian box office.

The total box office for 2009 local releases is $32,446,789.
