FTI are pleased to announce that nominations for the 27th WA Screen Awards (WASAs) are now open.
Entries are invited from West Australian filmmakers and game developers across 33 categories and will close at 5pm on Monday, April 20.
Nominees will be announced at a function in late May and the 27th WASAs will be held on Monday 29 June 2015 at the prestigious Heath Ledger Theatre at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia.
Winners will again once receive the beautiful custom-made Geoffrey Drake-Brockman trophy unveiled last year and a cash prize of $5000 will once again be awarded to the Young Filmmaker of the Year.
"Not only did winning the Young Filmmaker of the Year Award provide the support of an incredibly generous cash prize (which is hugely appreciated for independent filmmakers like myself) but by recognising my work it also gave recognition to the many incredible artists who have worked with me to create our films. As an independent filmmaker navigating a sometimes treacherous profession, an award like this is rare and valuable," said Daniel Monks, Winner, 2014 Young Filmmaker of the Year.
In 2014, FTI attracted 448 entries from 172 nominees across 143 screen projects, and are expecting to break this record in 2015 with the success of WA films over the past year.
The last 12 months have been huge for WA film with features such as These Final Hours (Nathan Phillips, Jessica De Gouw), Kill Me Three Times (Simon Pegg, Luke Hemsworth), Son Of A Gun (Euan McGregor) and Paper Planes (Sam Worthington) all possible contenders.
Former WASA winners include some of Australia’s most prominent screen practitioners such as Nelson Woss (Red Dog), Elissa Down (The Black Balloon), Zak Hilditch (Cannes-nominated These Final Hours), James Bogle (Lockie Leonard, The Circuit, Closed for Winter), Sue Taylor (The Tree, Last Train to Freo) as well as a who’s who of the next generation of household names including Lauren Elliot, Ben Young, Emilia Jolakoska, Antony Webb and seasoned professionals including Kim Lord, Laurie Silvestren, and Torstein Dyrting.
The 2015 red carpet event will feature VIP guests, world-class service, delicious canapés and premium beverages. Over 500 film industry leaders, Western Australian screen practitioners, media, sponsors and government officials will come together to celebrate the very best in West Australian screen production.
The WASAs is the premier celebration of West Australian screen culture, celebrating excellence and achievements in feature film, short film, web series, music videos, television production, documentary and games.
The WASAs are an FTI initiative held to enhance the vibrancy of the WA screen sector through increasing awareness of WA screen arts and connecting screen practitioners of all disciplines and career stages.
"Recognising and celebrating excellence in the local screen sector is the main focus of the WASAs, and as the profile of the event grows we are seeing that bringing attention to the practitioners who are driving that excellence brings with it opportunities to further their careers," said CEO of FTI, Paul Bodlovich.
FTI enhances the vibrancy of the WA Screen Sector by providing skills and career development, facilitating professional networking opportunities, and production development and support. The WASAs connect audiences with WA screen content and WA screen practitioners with each other.
The 27th Annual WASAs are presented in conjunction with the Revelation Perth International Film Festival (2 – 12 July 2015).
