In January 2013, Flickerfest International Short Film Festival will present Flickerlab a smorgasboard, of hot tips, the latest trends and the lowdown on the skills that you need to develop your creative film ideas and make them real. At this one-day lab, across 4 sessions, participants can learn from the experts and absorb the experience, the knowledge and the wisdom of our leading filmmakers as they take you on a journey from concept to script, through to production, markets and audiences on different platforms.

The four sessions will include The Writer: From Idea to Page, looking at story development through to scripting your great idea. A panel of writers and development executives will look at the process from early development to actual script. This session will start the day and run from 10.00am to 11.30am. Panelists will include Elissa Down (Writer/Director, The Black Balloon, Mr & Mrs Montague); Andrew Traucki (Writer/Director, Black Water, The Reef, Jungle), and Megan Simpson- Huberman, Director of Development & Production at Screen NSW)

Following on before lunch will be an examination of the Director’s role in the process, with GarryMaddox, film critic from the Sydney Morning Herald, interviewing first-time feature film directors Jennifer Kent (The Babadook) and brothers Colin & Cameron Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) in The Director: Case Studies, which will run from 11.45am to 1.15pm. Don’t miss the chance to hear first- hand how the to go from shorts to features, with a screening of material from these new feature directors, encompassing their shorts and their new work.

After lunch, don’t miss the The Producer: Making It Happen, from 2.00pm – 3.30pm, which features some of Australia’s most established and exciting new producing talent, including Angie Fielder(Producer, Wish You Were Here), Jamie Hilton (Producer, The Waiting City), Rosemary Blight (Producer, The Sapphires) and Screen Australia development executive, Christopher Sharp, who also looks after the Springboard programme.

This discussion and panel will follow the processes of development, financing, production and distribution from a producers perspective, and offer alternative, unique approaches to source funding, as well as innovative new approaches to production in the age of the trans-media storyteller.

And once the film is made, then the marketing and distribution kicks in. The Market: Distribution, Festivals & Multi-platform distribution session, from 3.45pm – 5.15pm aims to provide insightful and practical guidance on routes to getting your film seen and maximise promotion of your film. This will include traditional distribution and festival strategies, as well as the innovative new opportunities and potentials of multi-platform distribution.
