Flickerfest introduces new venture, FlickerLab

For the first time, Flickerfest, presented by ING Direct, introduces FlickerLab – a one-day intensive short film workshop that will investigate the latest trends, along with the tips and skills that filmmakers need to develop their creative idea and turn it into a successful reality and market it across all platforms. FlickerLab participants will plug in for a day and experience the knowledge and wisdom of an impressive selection of leading industry experts.

They will be taken on a journey from concept to script, a director’s case study and then on to production, market and innovative new opportunities and potentials of multi-platform distribution. This is a unique networking opportunity and a first-time chance to improve you knowledge and skills and build a successful and sustainable career in film, presented by Australia’s leading short film festival. Five engaging and informative sessions with internationally recognised industry practitioners will ensure you leave FlickerLab with the practical tools to take your career forward.


One of the key speakers this year is Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmaker JON BLOOM. Bloom is a four-term Governor at the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and Chair of the Short Films and Feature Animation Branch. He brings a lifetime of know how to FlickerLab and four decades of experience and success in the motion picture industry. Bloom is a renowned specialist in entertainment marketing and a specialist trailer
maker who counts among his kudos six Emmy nominations, an Oscar nomination and countless other nominations and accolades. He has worked with and directed Hollywood’s who’s who including Dudley Moore, Tom Hanks, Danny Glover, Jane Fonda and Bruce Willis. The films he has worked on include Dances With Wolves, The Fast and the Furious, Mansfield Park, Chocolat, Toys and Chicago.


Bloom will be joined by an impressive list of successful filmmakers and film industry professionals. They include DAVID MICHOD (Animal Kingdom), EMMA MORONEY (Supervising Producer Movie Network, Webfest), WAYNE BLAIR (The Sapphires) who will be presenting a masterclass on his journey from shorts to feature, PAUL WELSH (Lore), DAVID JOWSEY (Mad Bastards), SAM JENNINGS (Screen NSW), CHRISTOPHER SHARP (Screen Australia), RACHEL OKINE (Hopscotch Films), COURTNEY BOTFIELD (Transmission Films) as well as Flickerfest Festival Director BRONWYN KIDD.

FlickerLab will take place at the Bondi Pavilion on Monday 9th January 2012 from 10am-5pm and will be followed by networking drinks. At the conclusion of FLICKERFEST, FlickerLab will move on to Byron Bay where it will precede the finalist screening of Byron All Shorts on Saturday, 21st
January 2012 from 2.30pm – 4.30pm and the start of Flickerfest 37 venue national tour. This event is supported by Screenworks.

Eligibility: FlickerLab is designed for filmmakers ready to broaden their filmmaking skill set and eager to tackle the transition from shorts to features. Attendees will include all filmmakers in competition at Flickerfest 2012, as well as being open to all emerging filmmakers who have at least one notable credit to their name from a film that has screened at a recognised film festival.
