Flickerfest tour reaches Broome

Celebrating 20 years of screening the best internationally acclaimed short film fun, has hit the road for its annual summer tour, taking short film to 30 venues across regional and rural Australia.

Flickerfest Kicked off in Byron Bay on Friday 21st January and is covering 30 hot spots hungry for great films with many sell-out sessions across the country and a further 13 venues to go nationwide until March 30th. Flickerfest continues to engage new audiences locally and remains as committed as ever to exposing the best in short film from Australia and the world to new audiences.

Celebrating 20 years of Flickerfest, 2011 has proven to be the biggest and best year ever – with a record 1793 entries from all over the world received out of which a final 108 have been distilled into the crème de la crème of local and global short filmmaking, handpicked for competition.

In 2011 Flickerfest’s international reputation took another step up, as all entries from the UK will now receive official recognition from the British Academy Of Film and Television Arts, to be eligible for a BAFTA nomination. This is on top of the Festival already being the only Academy® Award accredited short film festival in Australia.

Highlights Across the Programmes screening across Australia include: The Best Of Australian shorts programme with several award winning films and starring many big Australian actors and celebrities including The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan (voiced by comic Tim Minchin) which took home the award for Best Australian Film at Flickerfest in 2011 and has JUST collected the Oscar for Best Short Animation, the Flickerfest Audience Award winning comedy When The Wind Changes; AFI Award winner and Flickerfest winner for best Cinematography The Kiss and The Telegram Man starring Jack Thompson in his first ever short film alongside Sigrid Thornton and Gary Sweet. Also screening as part of our Best Of Australian shorts is the funny and heartfelt award winning film Glenn Owen Dodds, starring David Wenham

International highlights handpicked from competition include the French screwball comedy ¿Donde Esta Kim Basinger? Winner Of Best Short film At Flickerfest 2011, the powerful drama Na Wewe, from Belgium nominated for the 2011 Academy ®Awards for Best Live action Short and The Cow Who Wants To be A Hamburger from Oscar winning USA animator Bill Plympton.
