Gruen returns to ABC in September

Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder's Gruen is back for its 12th season on the ABC from September 9.

The series, which debuted in 2008, will return with Will anderson as host and executive producer. Advertising execs Todd Sampson and Russell Howcroft will also rejoin the panel.

But, according to a company statement, the show will include new panelists from spin doctors and marketing gurus both in Australia and visiting.

This time round the show will focus on the increasingly sophisticated methods advertisers are using to target their intended audience.

"We’re still the show that analyses what most other shows are there to sell: advertising. But we’re also the show that knows you can’t click on a link without surrendering all your personal data to a corporation trying to sell you shampoo," according to a CJZ statement.

"Gruen will run an X-Ray over advertising, spin, branding, positioning and image control, wherever they are found.

"The selling of ideas and products will always amuse, bewilder, and irrationally annoys us – but now it’s more sophisticated, targeted and occasionally downright creepy.

"Mostly it just understands you better, so we’re here to provide you with the tools to understand it."

CJZ have delivered The Gruen Transfer and Gruen Nation, now it is just Gruen.

Each week the show will dissect the spin of a topical story that has made headlines either in Australia or overseas.

Classic segments will return, such as ‘The Pitch’, where some of Australia’s most creative agencies attempt to complete an impossible brief.

ABC TV head of entertainment, Jon Casimir said: “After the show took a well-earned break in 2014, we’re seriously excited to have Wil and Gruen back, lifting the lid on advertising, spin and marketing, examining how we are sold to, and how we are sold.”

Anderson said he couldn’t be more excited to be working with the amazing team at CJZ.

"I’m even more grateful they didn’t replace me with Adam Hills,” he said.

The first episode airs on September 9 at 8.30pm.

The team includes executive producers Nick Murray (CJZ), Wil Anderson, Sophia Zachariou (ABC) and Polly Connolly as series producer.
