Hacksaw Ridge leads AACTA Award nominees

Hacksaw Ridge.

Hacksaw Ridge, which marks Mel Gibson’s return to directing after a decade-long hiatus, leads the pack among this year's AACTA Award nominees. The film has received nominations in 13 categories – including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Lead Actress and Best Lead Actor.

Simon Stone’s The Daughter is close behind, nominated in 10 categories.

Foxtel is on board as the new presenting partner for the awards, which sees 300 individual practitioners from over 90 productions competing in 50 categories. Foxtel replaces Presto as the AACTA's principal partner following Foxtel’s recent acquisition of Seven West Media’s stake in the joint venture.

The five films competing for Best Film are: The Daughter, Girl Asleep, Goldstone, Hacksaw Ridge and Tanna.

The Best Direction nominees closely mirror the best film nods – Rosemary Myers is nominated Girl Asleep, her debut feature; Gibson for Hacksaw, and Bentley Dean and Martin Butler for Tanna. Ivan Sen has also received his third nomination in the category for Goldstone, alongside nods for Best Original Screenplay and Best Editing.

Alongside Goldstone in the Best Original Screenplay Category are Down Under, Hawksaw Ridge and Pawno, while The Daughter and Girl Asleep will square off for the Best Adapted Screenplay.

Vying for Best Lead Actor are Damian Hill and John Brumpton – both from Pawno, Hawksaw Ridge’s Andrew Garfield, and The Daughter’s Ewen Leslie.

Odessa Young (The Daughter) and Maggie Naouri (Joe Cinque’s Consolation) received first time nominations for Best Lead Actress in their feature film debuts. Also nominated are past AFI Award nominees Maeve Dermody (Pawno) and Teresa Palmer (Hacksaw Ridge).

Rachel Griffiths (Hacksaw Ridge), Kerry Armstrong (Pawno) are up for Best Supporting Actress, alongside Miranda Otto and Anna Torv, both nominated for their performances in The Daughter.

Mark Coles Smith (Pawno), Hugo Weaving (Hacksaw Ridge), Sam Neill (The Daughter) and Damon Herriman (Down Under) will square off for Best Supporting Actor.

Herriman is also nominated for Best Guest or Supporting Actor in a Television Drama for Foxtel’s Secret City.

In television, the ABC’s mini The Beautiful Lie has garnered nine nominations, while Foxtel’s The Kettering Incident has received eight.

The ABC leads the nominees for Best Television Drama Series, airing three of the four contenders – The Code, Rake, Jack Irish. Foxtel’s Wentworth has also received its third nomination in the category.

Up for Best Telefeature or Mini Series are Barracuda, The Beautiful Lie, The Kettering Incident and Molly, while squaring off Best Television Comedy Series are Black Comedy, The Family Law, Please Like Me and Upper Middle Bogan.

Up for Best Lead Actor in TV Drama are Samuel Johnson (Molly), Matt Nable (Barracuda), Richard Roxburgh (Rake) and Ashley Zukerman (The Code), while Danielle Cormack (Wentworth), Elizabeth Debicki (The Kettering Incident), Pamela Rabe (Wentworth) and Sarah Snook (The Beautiful Lie) compete for Best Lead Actress.

This year there are also five new television awards, including Best Lifestyle Television Program and four dedicated Subscription Television Awards, in partnership with the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA): Best New Talent, Best Male Presenter, Best Female Presenter and Best Live Event Production.

Another new award is also Best Hair and Makeup, for which Gods of Egypt, A Place to Call Home, Cleverman and Hacksaw Ridge are all nominated.

While the nominees for Best Feature Length Documentary have already been announced – Chasing Asylum, In The Shadow of the Hill, Remembering the Man and Snow Monkey – each also received additional craft nominations, including a Best Direction in a Documentary nomination for Eva Orner (Chasing Asylum), and an additional four nominations for In The Shadow of the Hill (Best Cinematography in a Documentary, Best Editing in a Documentary, Best Original Music Score in a Documentary and Best Sound in a Documentary).

Journo Sarah Ferguson follows last year’s win for Best Documentary Television Program (The Killing Season, ABC) with a second nomination for Hitting Home (ABC), alongside co-producers Nial Fulton and Ivan O’Mahoney.

Also nominated in the category are #BlackLivesMatter (ABC), Changing Minds: The Inside Story (ABC) and Matilda and Me (ABC).

“The nominees announced today showcase the tremendous quality and diversity of productions that the Australian screen industry continues to create. We congratulate all the Nominees and look forward to celebrating their fine achievements this December at the 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel in Sydney," said AFI | AACTA CEO Damian Trewhella.

The winners of the 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel will be announced across two events in Sydney at The Star Event Centre:

• The 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel | Industry Luncheon presented by Blue Post on Monday 5 December, and
• The 6th AACTA Awards presented by Foxtel | Ceremony & Official After Party on Wednesday 7 December, and televised on Channel 7 with an encore screening on Foxtel.
