Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 fifth biggest film in Oz

It’s official: Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is now the fifth biggest film of all time at the Australian Box Office.

And it’s set to steal the fourth-place crown from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by the end of this weekend.

Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the last film in the most successful franchise of all time – ahead of George Lucas’ Star Wars – has now raked in a phenomenal $48.4 million at the local box office, in just four weeks.

However, being shown in 3D has resulted in higher box office dollars due to more expensive ticket prices – the film was converted to 3D in post-production.

The "King of the World" James Cameron remains "King of the Aussie Box Office", with his blockbusters Avatar and Titanic remaining in first and second place. The 20th Century Fox films grossed $115.6 million and $57.7 million, respectively. Other films include Shrek 2 (UIP/Universal), Crocodile Dundee (Hoyts), The Dark Knight (Warner Bros) and Toy Story 3 (Walt Disney) – see table below.

The final Harry Potter opened on July 13 on a record 754 screens (in both 3D and 2D) and took in just over $7 million on its first day, breaking the local record (knocking The Return of the King off its throne).

It also went on to post the biggest opening week in history, grossing $29.3 million. Part 1 posted the ninth biggest opening week of all time last November, making just over $19 million, before going on to make $42 million.

The epic Warner Bros finale, based on the novel by British author J.K. Rowling, depicts the battle between good and evil as Harry faces Voldemort for the final time.

Directed by David Yates, the fantasy flick again stars Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, reprising their roles as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively.

Australian effects companies Rising Sun Pictures and Animal Logic both worked on the latest film, which has made $US1.15 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
