It’s a family affair for the Edgerton brother’s first feature

Backyard dreams of making a feature film together are finally being realised for brothers, Nash and Joel Edgerton as pre-production cranks up a gear to start shooting their first feature The Square on 10 September.
Both well known and respected in the international film communities, the 7-week shoot in Sydney and the Sutherland shire will be an exciting debut for both Nash and Joel.
Nash originally known as a sought after stunt performer with over 100 films to his credit, has in more recent years gained great acclaim for his work as an actor, editor and an award-winning writer and director. Since his short film Deadline won the prestigious Tropfest Short Film Festival in 1997, he has steadily accumulated accolades for his Short Films and innovative Music Videos for artists such as Ben Lee, Evermore, Missy Higgins, Eskimo Joe, Sleepy Jackson and Toni Collette. His short films have been represented at various international festivals, and his most recent short film Spider, took out the audience award at the Sydney Flim Festival. The Square is Nash Edgerton’s feature film directorial debut.
Although Joel has been writing and acting for fifteen years, it has been his work in front of the camera, acting in a wide range of films and with a exciting variety of directors, including George Lucas (Star Wars), Antoine Fuqua (King Arthur), Julian Jarrold (Kinky Boots), Gregor Jordan (Ned Kelly), John Curran (Praise) and of course, his own brother Nash Edgerton that has garnered attention. Indeed, Joel was named in Variety’s ‘The Ten Actors to Watch’ and he has just completed the shooting of the Australian film Acolytes. The Square is Joel’s first produced feature film as a writer.
Joel is the originator of the story which was inspired by various newspaper headlines about ordinary people pushed to extreme and desperate measures for love. In the film, a regular suburban man’s life begins to unravel when his mistress brings him a suitcase of cash.
The Square will be produced by Louise Smith whose past feature credits include Co-Producer on The Rage in Placid Lake. Joel Edgerton, Nash Edgerton and Co-writer Matthew Dabner are all Executive Producers.
The full cast is yet to be announced but David Roberts, Claire van der Boom and AFI Award winning actor Anthony Hayes will star. David Roberts has had roles in Hollywood films such as Fool’s Gold, Ghost Rider, The Matrix II Reloaded and The Matrix III Revolutions, as well as Australian movies such as Three Dollars and Gettin’ Square.
NIDA graduate Claire van der Boom has been tagged as one of Australia’s brightest young stars. She has starred in short film Katoomba (winner of the Dendy Award for Best Fiction at the 2007 Sydney Film Festival), as well as critically acclaimed television show Love My Way. The Square will be Claire’s feature film debut.
The Square will be distributed by Roadshow Films.
