Australia’s largest open-entry photography exhibition, the Kodak Salon, was opened and winners announced last night at Fitzroy’s Centre for Contemporary Photography.
Opening the Kodak Salon on behalf of the Minister for the Arts Peter Batchelor, Parliamentary Secretary for the Arts Rob Hudson said the 2010 exhibition had attracted over 400 artworks by 300 photographers from right across the country.
Also announcing the winners in 15 award categories, Mr Hudson said they would share in $16,000 worth of prizes.
“Thirteen of the awards have gone to Victorian photographers which shows the great talent we have here in Victoria,” Mr Hudson said.
“The Brumby Labor Government is a proud supporter of the Centre for Contemporary Photography and of the 2010 Kodak Salon.
“I congratulate all the winners and entrants. This is a wonderful exhibition which offers opportunities for photographers at all levels and shows the depth and diversity of Australia’s photography talent.”
Mr Batchelor said photography allowed all members of the community to participate either in front of or behind the lens and this year’s Kodak Salon exhibition was a fantastic example of this.
“This annual competition, now in its 17th year, showcases the latest developments in photographic practice and provides an opportunity for photographers from all walks of life to exhibit their work within a professional gallery setting,” Mr Batchelor said.
“The Centre for Contemporary Photography plays a key role in supporting the growth of photo-based practice in Australia.
“Kodak Salon helps to achieve this by highlighting the work of a cross-section of photographers including students, talented amateurs, emerging practitioners and professional artists.”
Mr Batchelor said the exhibition would engage visitors of all ages by presenting works across the spectrum of photography.
“From classical portraiture to landscapes, digitally constructed scenes and captured moments, Kodak Salon offers something for all tastes. What’s more, entry to this exhibition, like all exhibitions at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, is free for all visitors,” he said.
