Lucky Miles wins Audience Award for Best Film at the Sydney Film Festival

Dendy Films is delighted to announce that Lucky Miles has won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film (at the State Theatre), at this years Sydney Film Festival.

The accolade came as a pleasant surprise to first time feature film Director Michael James Rowland, who received the award at the closing gala ceremony.

‘To receive the people’s choice award is a real honour for me especially considering the high calibre of films featured in this year’s festival. I am so appreciative that people are able to resonate with the humour and pace of the film’, he said.

Releasing in cinemas nationally on July 19, Lucky Miles is a bittersweet comedy based on a collection of true stories. The film is set in 1990 when an Indonesian fishing boat abandons Iraqi and Cambodian refugees in a remote part of the Western Australia. Whilst most are quickly caught by officials, three men with nothing in common but their misfortune and determination escape arrest and begin an epic journey into the heart of Australia.  Pursued by an army reservist unit, our three heroes wander deeper into the desert, desperately searching for civilisation amongst the stones of the Pilbara.

Dendy Films joint General Manager, Richard Payten congratulated Rowland on his success: ‘Michael James Rowland has delivered a stunning first feature film and Dendy Films is delighted to be distributing it. We pride ourselves on releasing entertaining, challenging and thought-provoking films from Australia and around the world and Lucky Miles definitely fits that criteria.’

‘It is a bold move to tackle one of Australia’s hottest subjects at all, and to pull it off with such a lightness of touch is a credit to first-time feature director Michael James Rowland’ says Clare Stewart, Executive Director of The Sydney Film Festival.
