Made in Melbourne Film Festival

PRESS RELEASE

Now in its mini-milestone fifth year and supported by the Melbourne City Council, the Made In Melbourne Film Festival is bigger and bolder than ever before. Running over four nights from Tuesday Dec 3rd to Friday Dec 6th, MIM 2013 is a showcase for the very best films our city by the bay has to offer – shorts, features, as well as films by high school and even primary school students – our stars of the future.

The festival will open at the lavish Capitol Theatre right in the heart of the city with its traditional Short Film Showcase and exciting 'Best Film' contest as voted by the audience. Sit back with popcorn and a drink and immerse yourself in films that have travelled the globe, films that have won big, films that are big premieres. Highlights include the surreal horror noir Hungry Man by upcoming director Jordan Prosser, both a winner of the Best Honours Production at the VCA and participant in the prestigious Accelerator Shorts Program at MIFF. Veteran Melbourne actor and Master of Ceremonies Jeremy Kewley will return to host Opening Night.

From there MIM moves to the funky and eclectic Revolt Productions in Kensington. On Wednesday night the spotlight shines bright on independent features, opening with The Joe Manifesto, a personal story by award-winning writer / director Gregory Pakis, a film that is both wickedly funny and strikingly poignant as it explores true honesty inside a conformist and common life. This is followed by Vessel, the atmospheric and assured debut feature from Adam Ciancio, making its Melbourne premier straight from London Sci-Fi Festival and Fantasia International Film Festival in Canada.

Thursday begins with the High School Showcase. These are the best short films from Year 12 students and under, including Abracadabra! from very talented eleven-year-old director Catriona Warren, winner of the Award of Excellence at Indie Fest USA among many other accolades. This is a chance to get to know our filmmakers of the future and is bound to be a top night for the whole family.

The High School Showcase is followed by MIM's Feature Focus, the beautiful Bound by Blue by David Hawkins. 100 extras, 60 crew, 50 actors, 30 locations, and almost 3 years to make the BIGGEST little film of 2013 … for only $978. The result is incredible, a story of disconnection and growth, a film immensely engaging and inspiring, driven by rich character performances by a cast on top of their game, including Richard Davies from Channel Ten's Offspring. This is Melbourne independent filmmaking at its finest. The night will be hosted by winner of Star Central Magazine 2013 Best Male Actor of the Year, upcoming Melbourne MC and radio personality, James Liotta.

The festival concludes Friday night with more of the best short films, more multi-award winners, more premieres, more stories packed with twists and thrills, tears and joy, sex and power. Featuring Q & A's with the filmmakers, pizzas and ciders, audience voting for yet more prizes and the official After Party. Standout films include political comedy Caravans for Refugees by Jim Shomos starring television personalities Santo Cilauro, Helen Kapalos, and George Donikian.

Made In Melbourne is driven by crowd interaction with the audience voting for the best films. The winners receive a variety of fantastic prizes, including $1000 to the filmmaker that takes first place. MIM is a unique festival which has quickly become an end of year celebration of Melbourne filmmaking, attracting more entrants and patrons every year. Bring in the Summer with MIM 2013.
