MIFF appoints new artistic director

The Melbourne International Film Festival announced today that Michelle Carey is the new Artistic Director. Michelle Carey has been integral to the Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) for the last four years, holding both the Accelerator coordinator and Head of Programming positions. In addition to selecting many films and visiting numerous Festivals around the world, Michelle was responsible for programming the Anna Karina retrospective, Edward Yang, Australian Post-Punk Cinema, 40 Years of Directors Fortnight, Eros + Massacre and Not Quite Bollywood in 2010.
“We are thrilled to appoint Michelle as the Artistic Director – she has extensive experience in film programming, and has been a member of the MIFF programming team for the last four years. She understands both the festival’s diverse audiences and the ethos of the festival as a whole” said General Manager Petrina Dorrington.

Prior to MIFF, Michelle was a programmer for the Adelaide Film Festival and has also held positions at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, the AFI Research Collection and the Media Resource Centre (Adelaide).

Michelle is currently the president of the long-running Melbourne Cinémathèque and Editor – Film Festivals at the internationally respected online film journal Senses of Cinema. Michelle is also a scout for Australian cinema for the Rotterdam International Film Festival and has been on juries at Rotterdam and the Indie Lisboa film festival in Portugal.

“I’m thrilled to be appointed Artistic Director of such a prestigious and vibrant festival. After many years of helping to shape the program, I enthusiastically take on the task of overseeing the artistic vision of the festival, especially as it will celebrate 60 years next year” said Michelle.
Michelle Carey’s appointment will commence on September 1.
