MIFF hits the road

The Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) is taking five sell-out films on the road.

With the support from the Victorian State Government, the MIFF Travelling Film Festival will visit five regional centres with a series of weekend programs showcasing both Australian and International highlights from this year’s festival.

Running from August through September, the travelling festival will kick off in Bendigo (21–23 August) followed by Benalla and Wangaratta (4-6 September), Geelong (18-20 September), Ballarat (18-20 September) and Mildura (25-27 September). Special Q&A events will take place in each location.

The regional travelling festival re-launched in 2014 after six years of absence and this year will once again include family-friendly matinees, Saturday night specials, and a breath-taking story of love, hope and survival in Putuparri and the Rainmakers. Directed by Melbourne filmmaker Nicole Ma and based on Tom “Putuparri” Lawford’s (pictured left) battle with his past, present, and future as a leader of his people, Putuparri and the Rainmakers explores one man’s struggle to reconnect with his ancestral lands, learn about his traditional culture and ultimately fulfil his destiny.

Other films travelling include Neon, Lawrence Johnston’s vivid, insightful, and beautiful story of the fading craft of neon. Johnston celebrates both the beauty and romance and the art and science of the visually stunning element that has profoundly coloured the modern world; 99 Homes a political drama about the collapse of the US housing market, explores a single father’s determination to buy his home back after being kicked out with only minutes to collect his belongings, starring Andrew Garfield (Spiderman), Laura Dern (Wild) and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) as the charismatic real-estate mogul.

From director, Andrew Bujalski comes Results, a comedy set in the world of Texan gym trainers starring Guy Pearce as a workout guru caught in the midst of a love triangle between a recently divorced and out of shape New Yorker (Kevin Corrigan) and tough-as-nails gym trainer (Cobie Smulders); and for family audiences Song of the Sea, a visually enchanting animation directed by Academy Award nominee Tomm Moore.
