Moonacre set for DVD release

By Brendan Swift

Fantasy feature The Secret of Moonacre will bypass cinemas and instead be released on DVD on September 2 by distributor Rialto Entertainment.

The $US27 million film was produced by local ScreenACT boss Monica Penders and Screen Queensland’s head of development and production Meredith Garlick.

It had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2008 before being released in the UK and other major territories last year, grossing $US6.38 million around the world according to Box Office Mojo.

The film is based on the novel The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge and stars Ioan Gruffudd, Dakota Blue Richards and Tim Curry.

It follows 13 year old Maria Merryweather, who is forced to leave her luxurious London life after her father's death to go and live with an eccentric uncle she didn't know she had at Moonacre Manor.

She discovers that she is the last Moon Princess and must overcome her family's pride in order to unearth the secrets of the past before the 5000th moon rises and Moonacre disappears into the sea forever.
