Muriel’s Wedding to be made into a musical

The iconic Aussie film Muriel’s Wedding is set to become a musical for the Sydney Theatre Company.

The film’s original writer and director, PJ Hogan, will be adapting the screenplay for the stage show, bringing Muriel Heslop’s story into the present day.

“Following her dreams to Sydney, Muriel ends up with everything she ever wanted — a man, a fortune and a million Twitter followers. That’s when things start to go really wrong,” said STC in the show's description.

Singer-songwriters Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall will be writing original music for the show, alongside, naturally, songs from ABBA.

The show will be directed by Simon Phillips, who also brought Priscilla, Queen of the Desert to the stage, and feature set and costumes from Gabriela Tylesova (Love Never Dies).

Global Creatures will produce alongside STC.

Muriel’s Wedding The Musical is set to run from 6 Nov — 30 Dec 2017 at the Roslyn Packer Theatre.
