National event screenings for Love Marriage in Kabul

Love Marriage in Kabul, Australian/Persian filmmaker Amin Palangi’s documentary feature and the winner of the Audience Award at this year’s Sydney Film Festival, begins a series of special event screenings around the country from November 5.

Screening dates and venues are:

5 – 6 November, Chauvel Cinema, Sydney
13 – 14 November, Cinema Nova, Melbourne
20 November, Palace Nova, Adelaide
27 November, State, Hobart
3 December, Palace Electric, Canberra
5 December, Luna Paradiso, Perth

The film follows Mahboba Rawi, a strong-willed Afghan-Australian woman and the founder of the charity Mahboba’s Promise, which helps orphans and widows in Afghanistan,  on one of her regular trips back to her birth country.

Abdul, one of these orphans, is in love with Fatemeh, the girl next door. The two have been exchanging romantic letters for over a year and hope to marry one day. But Fatemeh’s father has decided to marry her off to anyone who can offer a large sum of money as her dowry. Devastated, Abdul is hoping when Mahboba arrives for her yearly visit to Kabul, she will help him again.

However, Fatemeh’s father makes demands beyond anyone’s expectations. He won’t let the marriage happen unless Mahboba pays him $10,000 or finds a wife for his eldest son to replace Fatemeh’s role in the household. With nothing to Abdul’s name, the fate of the couple depends entirely on Mahboba’s ability to meet or negotiate the father’s terms. But she only has one month and limited resources.

These special event screenings will help to support Mahboba’s Promise. Tickets $25 Concessions $20. There will be a Q&A with Amin Palangi at each screening.
