Hot on the heels of their Official Selection into the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, The People’s Republic of Animation (PRA) has won the Creative Hotshop Award for Animation.

The Creative Hotshop Awards run by Australian Creative magazine, part of the AdNews Group, are recognised as one of Australasia’s most distinguished platforms for uncovering and celebrating the region’s best professional creative talent. The competition rewards agencies, designers, production, and photography studios, who are producing clever, unique and effective solutions for their clients.

Adelaide-based The People’s Republic of Animation (PRA) is a talented studio creating work that promotes a reaction. The diverse team of writers, artists and directors produce animation for film, advertising and video games and is currently developing animated feature films with attitude. The philosophy ‘we would rather offend some than impress none’ is central to their work.

Overall, this year’s Hotshop judges summed up PRA as fun and entertaining with a fresh spin on advertising content and a diverse reel. One judge said: ‘PRA wins for its bravery and exciting response to briefs – refreshing and hard not to watch’.

PRA Managing Director, Sam White says ‘’It’s a truly reassuring experience to win the Hotshop Animation Award. We’ve only just scratched the surface of what we can offer our ad agency and game developer clients and are extremely excited about the projects that lie ahead this year.”

The Creative Hotshop Awards are judged by a panel of top creatives who decide winners and finalists by ranking each entry according to innovation, execution and consistency. The animation category was judged by Garry Jacques (Chairman) TheLab; Olivia Meredith, SBS; Mark Simpson, Sixty40; Charlton Hill, Supersonic; Emile Rademeyer, FSM; Peter Grasse,
Curious Film; Karen Bryson, @radical.media; Karla Henwood, Nylon Studios.

Judges cited PRA highlights including the video game cinematics for the official trailer of de Blob, a 90-second teaser for a recently released Nintendo Wii game; the seamless animated one-shot ad ‘Four Seasons’ for Rundle Mall, described as ‘a unique spot with world-class quality execution’; ‘The Bugfather’ and Coopers Sparkling Ale ‘Rockwiz Q&A’ TV commercials; the creation of a teaser for PRA’s feature film in development, The Popovich 5; and The Cat Piano, the PRA’s eight minute animated film that recently had its world premiere at the 2009 BigPond Adelaide Film Festival.
