SBS documentary series Struggle Street helps spark national conversation

PRESS RELEASE

Last night, SBS documentary series Struggle Street concluded with over a million people tuning in to hear the rarely heard voices of Australians doing it tough.

A combined 1.133 million people (Metro: 807,000; Regional: 327,000) viewed episode 2 in the 8.30pm timeslot, and a combined 1.191 million (Metro: 851,000; Regional: 339,000) viewed episode 3 at 9.30pm. SBS ONE’s metro free-to-air share last night was 11.3%.

Filmed over a six-month period, Struggle Street explored a range of issues including drug addiction, illness, unemployment and generational cycles of disadvantage.

With a reach of 3.275 million people across the three episodes (Metro and Regional combined, including the episode 1 repeat), the program has helped spark an important national conversation around social equality and disadvantage in Australian society.

Viewers responded with robust and engaged conversation on social media. The hashtag #strugglestreet trended at number 1 on Twitter in Australia during episode 1 last week, and Struggle Street was the number 1 trending TV program last night.

Struggle Street follows a pedigree of SBS factual programming including Go Back to Where You Came From and First Contact which have helped start rigorous national conversation around significant social issues.
