Screen Music Awards for the composers behind ‘The Get Down’, ‘Jasper Jones’

Antony Partos with his award for ‘Jasper Jones’.

Composer Antony Partos’ original score for Jasper Jones has seen him win Feature Film Score of the Year at the Screen Music Awards for the second year running.

Held last night in Melbourne, the Screen Music Awards were staged jointly by APRA AMCOS and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers, honouring the work of Aussie screen composers in 12 categories.

Partos’ award for Jasper Jones follows his win for 99 Homes last year. Other winners on the night included Missy Higgins, who won Best Original Song Composed for the Screen for her song ‘Torchlight’, written for Don’t Tell, and Jed Kurzel, whose score for Alien: Covenant took out Best Soundtrack Album.

In television, Elliott Wheeler’s work on Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix series The Get Down saw him take home Best Music for a Television Series or Serial, and Bryony Marks’ score for ABC series Barracuda won Best Music for a Mini-series or Telemovie.

Fox League Super Saturday won Best Television Theme, composed by Briggs, Justin Shave and Charlton Hill. In a statement, Briggs said: “The song reflects the journey of the Indigenous players – who give so much excitement and leadership to the sport and community week in and week out, not just the specific Indigenous round.”

The award for Most Performed Screen Composer – Australia has gone to co-composers Adam Gock and Dinesh Wicks, while composer Neil Sutherland was named Most Performed Screen Composer – Overseas for the 10th year running, taking his overall tally of Screen Music Awards to a record 12.
