Senate arts funding inquiry hits Sydney

The Senate inquiry into funding for the arts will complete its national roadshow in Sydney tomorrow after hearings in Melbourne, Perth, Hobart, Brisbane, Darwin and Cairns.

The inquiry started after artists objected to then minister George Brandis shifting $105 million from Arts Council funding into a new National Program for Excellence in the Arts.

Under the Arts council, funding was distributed at arms-length.

Under the new arrangement the minister has the final say on funding.

The Australia Council has also been ordered to find savings of $7.3 million on top of previous cuts of $28.3 million over four years.

Since the funding changes, the Australia Council has abandoned its new six-year funding program.

It has also cancelled its artists in residence program, suspended its June funding round and culled the ArtsStart and Creative Communities Partnerships initiatives.

The Australian Writers' Guild is urging artists to attend the hearing.

The AWG will be giving evidence on the first panel of the day at 8am, along with other writers’ organisations.

"The event is open to everyone and the presence of working playwrights will show the Senators the strength of feeling on issues such as cutting funds to the Australia Council and the plan by the former Arts Minister, Senator George Brandis, to set up a National Programme for Excellence in the Arts to allocate arts funding by the Minister himself," according to an AWG statement.

"The AWG has sent in a submission and recently surveyed Australian playwrights to determine how they feel about their profession, work and funding.

"We’ll be sharing some of these findings with the senators, so come along and enjoy one of the best shows in Town tomorrow."

The inquiry starts at 8am at The Portside Centre, Symantec House, 207 Kent Street Sydney.

A report will be tabled in the Senate on November 26.
