Several Australians become ScreenSingapore ambassadors

Several high profile global filmmakers and a number of Australians have become ambassadors for the inaugural 2011 ScreenSingapore event.

The list of 52 ambassadors includes Omnilab Media managing director Christopher Mapp, Village Roadshow chairman Robert Kirby, Icon Productions' Bruce Davey, Hoyts Group chief executive Delfin Fernandez and Amalgamated Holdings managing director David Seargeant. Other international ambassadors include Wayne Wang (director of The Joy Luck Club, Maid in Manhattan and Smoke) and Oliver Stone (director of Platoon, Wall Street, JFK).

The event, which will be held in June, aims to bring together movie stars, directors and film industry professionals to exchange ideas, business opportunities and showcase film products.

Singapore has four official film co-production partner countries – Australia, Canada, China and New Zealand.

The MDA has already co-funded a Singapore-Australian co-production, Bait 3D, through its new International Film Fund (IFF), which will premiere at the 2012 ScreenSingapore event. It has also committed to fund another local 3D film, The Harvest, which will be produced by Singapore’s Blackmagic Design Films and Australia's Goalpost Pictures.

The chairman of ScreenSingapore, Greg Coote, said the formal support of renowned film professionals and filmmakers was an honour.

"To know that we have their confidence in what ScreenSingapore will achieve just validates that we are on the right track and we look forward to working closely with each of them to develop Singapore’s potential as a film hub,” he said in a statement.

Coote, who started his long career in the Australian distribution sector, was also recently appointed the chairman of the Australian Stock Exchange-listed production startup RGM Media.
