SPAA endorses TVC membership changes

[Release by SPAA]

The SPAA Television Commercials Division has recently attracted increased interest from the sector. Members are keen to build the vitality of the division and to extend membership to a greater number of TVC producers. Doing so to underpin the aims of SPAA, which are: to improve the business and production environment in which TVC producers work.

SPAA is pleased to announce that the SPAA Council have fully endorsed the members’ proposal to restructure the SPAA TVC membership fees and levies. This effectively means a reduction in the top rate by over 50%, opening TVC membership to freelance producers and facilitating cross membership interest from companies active in other SPAA divisions through a special one-off modest annual levy.

The importance of TVC Producers is recognised by SPAA. Both within the commercials industry itself and in the creative and technical production activity they generate across the broader audiovisual sector.

TVC Producers are increasingly the nurturers of Australia’s next drama directors, cinematographers and designers. TVC productions are operating, at a pace, at the ‘pointy’ commercial end of the industry. They are regularly out on location, in cast and crew negotiations and pitching their services against their international counterparts and as such are well aware of the chinks and challenges.

There are threats to the sector as well as opportunities ahead. No co-ordinated national marketing activity for the TVC sector has taken place since Ausfilm moved away from supporting this sector in 2005.

Areas that members, united under the SPAA brand can together work to improve include: Changes in client advertising behaviour, changing government regulations affecting business and production responsibilities and liabilities; trading terms and stresses and shifts in international competition.

Can you afford not to be a part of it? If you are interested in joining call Jo Smith at SPAA direct on (02) 9360 8988 or email jo@spaa.org.au. You could also contact the TVC SPAA Councillor Carolyn Starkey from Verve Films and/or SPAA member representatives direct – Matt Long at Good Oil and Anna Fawcett at Film Graphics.
