SPAA Fringe gets serious about comedy

[Press Release by Tsuki]

On 24 and 25 October at Sydney’s Chauvel Cinema, 2008 SPAA Fringe welcomes comedy legend Anthony Watt, series producer of Spicks & Specks and Robert Hibbert & Sean Condon, winners of The Comedy Channel’s ‘Comedy Gold competition’ for their amusing project, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better.

The two-day event offers a unique opportunity for the emerging sector to spend quality time with established filmmakers such as Watt, who has been producing ABC’s weekly game show TV series, Spicks and Specks, hosted by comedian Adam Hills, since its beginning. Having a brief to include as many music forms and to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, Watts has continued to re-invent the show, keeping it fresh and innovative over 160 episodes. At SPAA Fringe, Watts will share his wealth of experience and expertise that he has developed over 15 years having also written and produced for comedy television shows including, Full Frontal, Hamish & Andy and Comedy Inc.

An initiative of SPAA Fringe is to seek out up-and-coming filmmakers who are making waves on the scene. Hibbert and Condon are a creative duo who are rapidly rising in the industry, having won $25,000 in last year’s Comedy Gold competition for their entertaining TV sitcom concept, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Better, which has already advanced to stage 2 of the development process with the likelihood that it will be screened on The Comedy Channel in 2009.

SPAA Fringe is a forum for emerging producers and filmmakers to gain knowledge, be inspired and evoke innovation within the film industry. Join Watt, Hibbert and Condon as well as many other top industry professionals who will be sharing their experiences and insight, offering creative direction for up-and-coming filmmakers seeking lasting careers in the screen industry.

SPAA Fringe is brought to you by the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA) an industry body that represents Australian independent film and television producers on all issues affecting the business and creative aspects of screen production.
