Star Wars: The Force Awakens breaks Aussie opening day record

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has become the highest grossing film for an opening day in Australia and is already half way to achieving the opening weekend record.

A Hoyts spokeswoman told IF The JJ Abrams intergalactic epic had surpassed previous record holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, by 33 per cent.

"It is already half way to achieving the Opening Weekend Box Office record currently held by the same film ($18.4M)," she said.

"Hoyts has over 2400 2D and 3D sessions scheduled for Friday through to Sunday and pre-sales are extremely strong with the pace of ticket sales increasing as we get closer to the weekend .

"We’re expecting huge numbers and certainly think that more records are set to tumble."

According to Hoyts, JJ Abrams wants the audience to see Star Wars in IMAX and experience the film the way it was intended to be experienced.

Abrams shot a number of sequences of Star Wars: The Force Awakens with IMAX’s extremely high-resolution cameras and only in IMAX theatres will these sequences expand vertically to fill the entire screen, providing moviegoers with even greater scope and breathtaking image quality for a truly immersive experience.

There are 3 x IMAX screens across the Hoyts Circuit. These include at the Entertainment Quarter,  Hoyts Carousel and Hoyts Highpoint.

They will screen 5 sessions a day each all of which are filling fast.

A Hoyts spokeswoman said LUX was proving to be a very popular way to experience the film with the majority of sessions for the weekend sold out.

"Sessions for Boxing Day and beyond are on sale with plenty of seats available," she said.
