Tanna is based on a true story about a girl who runs away from an arranged marriage.
Tanna, Sherpa and Peter Allen – Not the Boy Nex Door have taken top honours at the 2016 Australian Director's Guild Awards.
Jennifer Peedom has won Best Direction in a Documentary Feature at the Awards in Melbourne, in the same week as her film Sherpa passed $1 million at the local box office.
Hosted by Nazeem Hussain, the awards honoured the outstanding work over the past year of Australian directors working in film, television, music and advertising.
Other winners included Bentley Dean and Martin Butler, who won Best Direction in a Feature Film for Tanna.
The film was made in collaboration with the Yakel people of Tanna, Vanuatu.
Rachel Perkins won her second ADG Award, this time for Best Direction in a Telemovie for Redfern Now: Promise Me.
Best Direction in a TV Drama Series went to Emma Freeman for her work on Glitch and Shawn Seet was presented with his third ADG Award, this year winning for Best Direction in a TV Mini Series for Peter Allen – Not the Boy Nex Door.
Other winners in the TV categories were David Gould for Best Direction in a TV Drama Serial for his work on Home and Away and Jonathan Brough for Best Direction in a TV Comedy for Sammy J & Randy in Rickett's Lane.
The Esben Storm Award for Best Direction in a Children’s TV Drama went to Daina Reid for Ready for This.
Joining Jennifer Peedom in the Documentary categories were David Mason, who won Best Direction in a Documentary Stand Alone for Cast from the Storm and Ivan O’Mahoney who won Best Direction in a
Documentary Series for Episode 1 of Hitting Home.
Del Kathryn Barton and Brendan Fletcher were the winners of Best Direction in an Animation for Oscar Wilde's The Nightingale and the Rose and Darlene Johnson won Best Direction in a Short Film for Bluey.
Nash Edgerton won Best Direction in a Music Video for his work on Bob Dylan’s The Night We Called it a Day and the award for Best Direction in an Original Online Project went to Kacie Anning for Series 2 of Fragments of Friday.
Best Direction in a TV Commercial went to Tim Bullock for Volkswagen Bear.
Sue Brooks also received the ADG/DGA Finders Award and Geoffrey Nottage won the Michael Carson Award, which recognises excellence in the craft of television drama direction.
