Twilight Saga breaks DVD sales records

Press release from Hausmann

With over a quarter of a million Blu-ray and DVD copies of The Twilight Saga: New Moon sold in its first week in stores, there is no doubt that the Twilight phenomenon continues to take Australia by storm.

According to sales results released by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) today, The Twilight Saga: New Moon has gone on to have the highest first week sales of any home entertainment title in the last six years, knocking it's prequel, Twilight, firmly from its throne.

The 285,199 Blu-ray and DVD units sold in the first week means that The Twilight Saga: New Moon is also the third largest home entertainment release of all time since the inception of DVD, pushing Twilight to fourth. Similarly, The Twilight Saga: New Moon is the fourth highest first week seller on Blu-ray.

According to SPHE Managing Director Kim Overall, the momentum of new Twilight fans joining with the already addicted has elevated the success of the franchise beyond expectations, and confirmed predictions that it will only continue to grow with the arrival of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, in cinemas July 1 2010.

“We are beyond thrilled with the first week results of The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” said Overall. “To see any home entertainment title be embraced by the public with such passion and enthusiasm is a fantastic result for our industry.”

Based on Stephanie Meyer’s phenomenally successful novel, The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened to a $16 million plus weekend at the Box Office – one of the highest EVER in Australia.

The second instalment of the series sees the battle lines drawn between those on Team Edward (Robert Pattinson) and those on Team Jacob (Taylor Lautner).

The Twilight Saga: New Moon is available to buy on Blu-ray and DVD now.
