US streaming deal for Kiwi drama

Following the April US premieres of Aussie period drama A Place to Call Home and David Morrissey’s BBC thriller The Driver, The Brokenwood Mysteries will debut on Acorn TV on consecutive Mondays beginning May 4.

One of the few detective dramas filmed and set in beautiful New Zealand, The Brokenwood Mysteries includes four feature-length, standalone murder mysteries set in a seemingly quiet country town.

Available at Acorn.TV, Acorn TV is the premier British TV streaming service in North America from RLJ Entertainment (NASDAQ: RLJE). Though Acorn TV specializes in British content, the service continues to acquire first rate Australian and New Zealand dramas like The Brokenwood Mysteries as well as recent premieres of ‘Australian Downton Abbey’ A Place to Call Home, public TV sensation Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Guy Pearce’s Jack Irish, ABC/HBO Asia’s Serangoon Road and WWI nurses’ drama ANZAC Girls.

The Brokenwood Mysteries follows the town’s newest resident, legendary but down-to-earth Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd, as he finds that murder lurks in even the most homely location. Neill Rea (Scarfies, Legend of the Seeker, Go Girls) stars in the lead role of DI Shepherd, while Fern Sutherland (The Almighty Johnsons) plays meticulous, ambitious Detective Constable Kristin Sims in this gripping and well-written mystery series. The Brokenwood Mysteries is a 2015 finalist in the Drama category at the New York Festivals Television & Film Awards.

Additionally, character DI Shepherd is a huge country music fan, so the series features a wonderful soundtrack with some of New Zealand’s most popular musicians, including Tami Neilson and Delaney Davidson. Both of whom have won multiple music awards.

As Mike uncovers a family’s tragedies and secrets he also learns that Brokenwood is a place where shadows lurk just beneath the surface.

RLJ Entertainment’s Acorn brand will also release the series on DVD in July 2015. Distributed by all3media International, The Brokenwood Mysteries premiered in New Zealand on Prime TV in Fall 2014. A second season is in production.

Acorn TV currently features the US premieres of the final season of the beloved mystery series Foyle’s War starring Michael Kitchen; the 1680s set British period drama New Worlds starring Jamie Dornan (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Joe Dempsie (Games of Thrones); and new BBC period drama Jamaica Inn starring Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey). Throughout April, Acorn TV also premieres Season 2 of must-see Aussie period drama A Place to Call Home and BBC thriller The Driver starring David Morrissey (The Walking Dead).

Available at www.Acorn.TV and a variety of devices, Acorn TV is the first British TV focused streaming service in North America. Given the limited broadcast options for U.S. viewers to watch first rate international programs, Acorn TV offers U.S. fans the opportunity to not only stream many of their favorite series but, more importantly, discover new and classic programs previously unavailable to U.S. audiences.

Acorn TV features a growing catalog of mysteries, dramas, documentaries, and comedies with no set end dates. Acorn TV offers a free 30-day trial and thereafter is just $4.99/month or $49.99/year.
