Van Diemen’s Land recognised in Europe

Press release from Nix Co.

Following a strong opening to its Australian release, the critically-acclaimed film Van Diemen’s Land has continued to garner international attention, winning the Siren Award for Best non-European movie at the Lund International Fantastic Film Festival in Sweden, and receiving a Noves Visions Special Mention Jury prize at the SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia.

These recent awards follow sellout screenings at Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, New Zealand, Edinburgh & Montreal Film Festivals. James Hewison, Madman Theatrical Manager, commented: “Madman is delighted that not only has Jonathan’s Van Diemen’s Land found both substantial critical acclaim & audiences at home in Australia, but its merits & ambitions have been justly rewarded internationally.”

Van Diemen’s Land  is the true story of eight desperate convicts’ infamous escape into the beautiful and brutal Tasmanian wilderness. God wields an axe and there can be only one survivor: Alexander Pearce. Since opening on 9 screens on 24 September, Van Diemen’s Land  has taken $194,500 at the Australian Box Office and achieved the highest opening in Tasmania to-date for a Madman release, playing at the Hobart State Theatre.

To celebrate the continued success of the film, Madman and Wide Angle Tasmania have announced a Tasmanian Q&A tour with director, Jonathan auf der Heide throughout October. Tickets are available for special Q&A screenings in Burnie, Devonport, Launceston, and Hobart. Further information is provided below. In addition to the Tasmanian tour, the film opens at Dendy Canberra, Cinema Paradiso WA and selected regional locations from 29 October.
