14 Aussie films to screen at CinéfestOZ

CinéfestOZ has unveiled its biggest program to date with more than 60 films on offer at this year’s festival, which starts on August 20th.

The 2014 program will feature 14 Australian, 10 French and one “Aussies Abroad” feature-length films, 13 community screenings and 29 short films over the five day event in the South West of Western Australia.

Among the list of Australian films are the six finalists for CinéfestOZ’s inaugural $100,000 Film Prize – Felony, Son of a Gun, The Reckoning, The Waler: Australia’s Great War Horse and MIFF@CinéfestOZ films My Mistress and Paper Planes.

The Waler: Australia’s Great War Horse will have its world premiere at CinéfestOZ while the festival will also host the Australian premieres of Son of a Gun and The Reckoning. CinéfestOZ will also screen for the first time in Western Australia Felony, My Mistress and Paper Planes.

Across the entire festival there will be three world premieres, five Australian premieres – including the children’s animated Australian feature Maya the Bee, which will screen as part of a special family event on Saturday, 23rd August – and 11 WA premieres.

Speaking at the launch of the 2014 program at Clancy’s Fish Pub in Dunsborough, deputy chair of CinéfestOZ Helen Shervington said the record number of films highlighted the festival’s growth over the past seven years.

“CinéfestOZ continues to go from strength to strength and it gives us enormous pleasure to see not only so many films scheduled for the festival but films of such high caliber,” Ms Shervington said.

“The program features something for everyone and highlights the diversity of talent we have in Australia and right here in our own State of Western Australia.”

CinéfestOZ also continues its proud association with France with a program which includes the Australian premiere of My Summer in Provence, Rose Bosch’s family drama featuring acclaimed French actor Jean Reno.

The French program will also feature the WA premieres of Frédéric Tcheng’s acclaimed documentary Dior and I, which takes the viewer inside the storied world of the Christian Dior fashion house; Gabrielle, a beautiful and affecting drama from the Academy Award-nominated producers of Incendies and Monsieur Lazhar; Alexandre Coffre’s lively romantic comedy The Volcano; and Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s family drama The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet.

“With so many wonderful films to choose from we strongly advice our audiences to book their tickets early to avoid missing out,” Ms Shervington said.

CinéfestOZ is supported by the State Government through Tourism WA’s Regional Events Program, which is funded by Royalties for Regions. The festival acknowledges its strong partnership with ScreenWest, Western Australia’s screen funding and development agency.

The full program of events and ticket sales will be available online on Friday, 1st August.
