ABC Innovation appoints Mark Dando as head of online and mobile

ABC Innovation has appointed Mark Dando to the newly-created role of head of online and mobile.

The position will oversee ABC Innovation’s digital networks stream, focusing on audience-facing initiatives across online and mobile platforms. Dando, who begins the role on October 8, will report to ABC of director innovation, Angela Clark.

Dando was previously worked at Fairfax Media’s Sydney operation where he was head of mobile strategy, and led the strategy for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age iPhone and iPad services, and launched the AirLink product. He has also worked for NineMSN, British Telecommunications, NEC and Microsoft.

ABC TV was the first Australian broadcaster to release an online streaming catch-up service in July 2008 with its iview product. In February this year, it launched iview for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

In a statement, Dando said: "Australians have a huge appetite for information and entertainment online, while new tablet and mobile devices are transforming the way we interact and the National Broadband Network will generate enormous creative possibilities for our industry. I’m looking forward to helping enrich the lives of all Australians through the innovative distribution of ABC’s quality news and entertainment content."
