Adam Arkapaw wins ‘Best Emerging Cinematographer’ at the Camerimage Festival

One of Australia’s most sought after Cinematographer’s, Adam Arkapaw, recently won the inaugural award for “Best Emerging Cinematographer” at the prestigious Camerimage Festival in Poland for his outstanding work on the critically acclaimed feature film, Animal Kingdom.

In the 18 year history of Camerimage, the only festival in the world dedicated to the art of cinematography, this is the second feature award ever given to an Australian. The jury included Michael Ballhaus (Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, The Departed), Christian Berger (White Ribbon, Hidden, The Piano Teacher) and Vittorio Stararo (The Conformist, Apocalypse Now, The Last Emperor) who presented Arkapaw with his award.

In addition to the above international award, Arkapaw also received an AFI nomination and won the ACS Gold Award in 2010 for Animal Kingdom.

Possessed with creative flair and a keen cinematic eye, Arkapaw is a recognised talent who has honed his craft on an eclectic slate of critically acknowledged short films and documentaries including the Cannes Jury prize-winning short film Jerrycan, and I love Sarah Jane, which won major awards at the Arizona International Film Festival, Nashville Film Festival and Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival.

His 2002 documentary credit, Desiree, was named Winner of the Kodak Award for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography and also screened in official competition at the 2003 Tribeca Film Festival followed by an award for Best Cinematographer at the 2006 Jackson Hole Film Festival (USA) for his work on the AFI nominated End of Town.

In addition to his film credits, Arkapaw has shot numerous high-profile music videos along with television commercials for companies such as Kleenex, Maggi, Nintendo and Nescafé and was also mentored by renowned cinematographer Andrew Lesnie on the second and third films in director Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Arkapaw’s next feature film, Snowtown, will premiere at the 2011 Adelaide International Film Festival. Snowtown is produced by Warp Films, directed by Justin Kurzel and written by Shaun Grant.
