Australian Online Video Awards

Next week sees the first ever major gathering of Australians working in online video. True to form, they’re doing it creatively.

Key industry figures and content creators including Bondi Hipsters co-creator and co-star, Christiaan van Vuuren, co-creator of The Tunnel, Enzo Tedeschi, Film Victoria CEO, Jenni Tosi, and representatives from companies including YouTube Los Angeles, VICE, Madman, Channel Seven and ABC TV, will converge at Docklands on 14 and 15 October for Open Channel’s “Generation Next: Online Video” two-day conference and national awards ceremony.

The new national awards, called the Australian Online Video Awards (the OVAs), will take place on Tuesday 14 October at Docklands Studios following day 1 of the conference, and will feature a fast and furiously fun evening celebrating the work of outstanding online creators. Lee Zachariah (of the much-loved film podcast Hell is for Hypehnates) will host the event, with entertainment from award-winning YouTubers, Chris & Josh, and featuring renowned DJ Chiara Kickdrum.

The OVAs has released its shortlist after a staggering 160 entries were received in its inaugural year. They can be viewed at http://www.ovas.tv/

Significant career-making prizes are on offer, including cash prizes and, for the winner of the Best Overall category, a trip to YouTube’s Creator Space in Los Angeles to learn from the world leaders in online video production and marketing, supported by YouTube.

Open Channel’s Executive Director Marc Gracie said that over two days “we will be looking at where the audience might be leading us and how storytellers can find, engage and build viable careers in this new online landscape.

“The Generation Next conference and the OVAs are connecting a whole new batch of online content makers and helping the industry and public recognise the exciting possibilities of these new forms of creative development.”
