Cutting Edge builds workflow for ARRI Alexa

Press release from Cutting Edge

Cutting Edge Sydney is in its second week on the debut feature film from Director Kieran Darcy-Smith and Producer Angie Fielder, SAY NOTHING. This mystery/thriller is produced by Aquarius Films in association with Blue Tongue Films and will shoot in Sydney and Cambodia over the coming months filming with the brand new ARRI ALEXA digital cinema camera, which is rapidly developing a reputation of being the best digital camera yet to match the latitude and colour response of 35mm film.

Cutting Edge will be the first Australia post production facility to work with the new camera in a feature film context and has been working closely with DOP Jules O’Loughlin to determine the best acquisition method and establish the best workflow for the Alexa performing a number of tests all the way to 5mm comparing the various data acquisition methods available.

Adrian Hauser, Cutting Edge Digital Intermediate and Rushes Colourist, says of the camera; “Aside form the Alexa’s older sibling, the D21, no other digital cinema camera I have graded has come as close to capturing the subtle characteristics of colour and light compared to 35mm film.”

“The extended latitude of the camera outside the photographed intent is truly amazing and the colour rendition and tonal quality of the captured scene is quite breathtaking.”

“The cameras ability to render the extremely subtle differences often seen in skin tones makes for truly captivating content and delivers drama to the screen – with no tricks.”

Rushes are being graded in a film out context and are being QC’d daily on Cutting Edges 5 metre Digital projection screen.
