Griswolds lead Aussie box office

The fifth instalment in the National Lampoon's Vacation film series has edged out Antoine Fuqua's boxing drama Southpaw at the Australian box office over the weekend.

Vacation, starring Ed Helms as Rusty Griswold and Christina Applegate as Debbie Grisworld), took $1.6 million on its opening weekend securing it the number one spot. It was shown on 236 screens.

Southpaw, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as Billy Hope and Rachel McAdams as his wife Maureen, also on its opening weekend, took $1.5 million on 193 screens.

Amy Schumer's Trainwreck took out third spot collecting $1.2 million. This brings its total box office earnings in Australia to $11.3 million, while Mission Impossible also took another million, taking its tally to $13.1 million.

Man from U.N.C.L.E continued its lacklustre run, taking $877,854, bringing it to a paltry total of $3.1 million.

Last Cab to Darwin pulled in another $830,000, bringing its cumulative revenue to $4.3 million. It was shown on 258 screens.

Fantastic four and Ant-Man rounded out the top ten with $468,556 and $357,363 respectively.

Australian film Holding the Man also took $11,536 on three screens for Thursday and Friday night showings only.
