Melbourne VFX bring superheroes and sea creatures to life

Melbourne’s visual effects talent will again be on display in cinemas around the world in the next superhero blockbuster from Marvel Entertainment and a sequel feature based on one of the most popular and successful children’s animated television series.

Visual effects packages for Marvel Entertainment’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies’ new SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS movie had been secured with the support of Film Victoria’s Production Incentive Attraction Fund (PIAF).

“That two major US productions have chosen local studios to complete their visual effects highlights the growing strength of the local post production industry and the outstanding talent available in Melbourne.

“Around 100 talented local practitioners are working on the animation and visual effects for these projects, generating an estimated $17.5 million in production expenditure in Victoria.

Film Victoria CEO Jenni Tosi congratulated Iloura and Luma Pictures Melbourne for continuing to secure complex and sophisticated packages of visual effects work in a competitive global market.

“Both Iloura and Luma secured their visual effects packages based on the strength of their work on previous features – for Luma it was Marvel’s hit THOR: THE DARK WORLD while for Iloura it was the stunning character animation for Seth MacFarlane’s debut feature TED.

“Victoria’s ability to attract projects of this scale gives practitioners the opportunity to further develop their skills and experience on high-end productions, which benefits the industry as a whole.”

These films join James Cameron’s DEEP SEA CHALLENGE and I FRANKENSTEIN, both due for release this year, as the latest productions attracted to the state through our Production Incentive Attraction Fund.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is set for release in April and stars Chris Evans, Samuel L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson. The new SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS film will feature a combination of traditional animation and live action and is due for release in 2015.
