Oscars nod for Flickerfest entrants

Press release from Flickerfest

Flickerfest, Australia’s premier Academy Accredited film festival extends a huge congratulations to 4 films that recently screened at Flickerfest on their Academy Award nominations.

Since 2002, Flickerfest has screened over 30 films that have been shortlisted and won Oscars and in 2011 we are thrilled to announce 4 recent Flickerfest entrants have been recognised by the Academy and are now in contention to take home a little gold man!

In the Best Animated Short category, the Australian film The Lost Thing has been nominated. The Lost Thing, created by Andrew Ruhemann and Shaun Tan recently won the Movie Extra Award For Best Australian Film at Flickerfest in 2011 and was the first animated film in the 20 year history of Flickerfest to take home the top prize.

The Lost Thing is an incredible and original work that captured the attention of our audience and jury alike. It is currently on tour with Flickerfest in the Best of Australian Shorts programme and this will be your only opportunity to see it on the big screen for the next few months! You can see all the screening dates for The Lost Thing by visiting: http://www.flickerfest.com.au/

The Gruffalo, which recently screened as part of our hugely popular FlickerKids programme is also nominated alongside The Lost Thing in the Best Short Animation category. Based on the hugely popular children's novel of the same name, The Gruffalo features the voices of Helena Bonham Carter and John Hurt. Flickerfest, in collaboration with Leichhardt Council’s Pics In The Park, will be screening The Gruffalo on the 28th Jan, 11th Feb, 25th Feb, and the 11th March for FREE! More information is available here: http://www.leichhardt.nsw.gov.au/

Nominated in the Best Live Action Short category are two films that proved extremely popular with Flickerfest audiences this year. Na Wewe, the story of the civil war in Burundi and the conflicts between the Hutus and the Tutsis will be touring as part of the Best Of International 2 Program with Flickerfest, visiting Dungog, Perth and Alice Springs in the coming weeks. The gorgeous God Of Love, about a lovestruck, lounge-singing darts champion who finds his prayers answered -literally – when he receives a box of passion-inducing darts is also nominated for the Best Live Action Oscar.

We wish all of these films the best of luck on Oscar Night and we cannot wait to see the results! Flickerfest is incredibly proud to be an important platform for short film in Australia and we remain committed to presenting short films to Australian audiences with our 30 venue tour of regional and rural Australia.
