Qantas documentary released this week

Press release from The Film Bakery

Sydney based production company, THE FILM BAKERY, have announced the release this week of their documentary From The Outback To The World at the Australian International Airshow.

With industry veteran Matt Carroll as Exec Producer, the film tells the improbable and ultimately inspiring story of how the airline founded by two 25 year olds in the middle of outback Queensland grew to become the national icon we know today. Through six planes that marked the great turning points in aviation history, the 90 year journey of Qantas unfolds as a series of daring innovations.

Writer/Director Clara Chong stated “As a privately financed, independent production, we were given unprecedented access to the Qantas film archives dating back to the 1920's. When we discovered the extent of the materials kept by Qantas and began to research the human stories behind them, we knew we had to make this film.”

Among this archival material is footage of 1920s wooden biplanes struggling in the heat of the outback, luxurious 1930s flying boats taking off in front of a recently completed Sydney Harbour Bridge and the changing fashions, foods and social attitudes of each new era.

The eventful final chapters leading up the airline’s 90th birthday played out while the documentary was still in production. Producer Ben Allan explains “We knew we had to address the A380 incident last November, and while we’ve been in constant contact with Qantas representatives, to their credit, they have made no attempt to interfere with the independence of the script.”

The Film Bakery used it's proprietary colour grading package The Grading Sweet and also developed new software tools to aid in the digital restoration of the archival footage. Many shots such as early colour footage have been restored well beyond their original condition. The DVD of the documentary can also be ordered through its official website: www.qantashistory.com
